Are you a full-time photographer?

Yes, I am so privileged to follow my dream and live out my passion as my full-time career.

What type of photography do you do?

I love photographing people, capturing emotion and the special bonds between them. My favourite is definitely wedding photography. Being able to spend entire days in the presence of love and beauty and having the honour of capturing it all to tell the couple’s wedding day story gives me enormous pleasure. Besides weddings I do portrait photography of families and couples, maternity and newborn photography and events.

Do you shoot in a studio?

I’m not a fan of studio photos. I prefer and enjoy the freedom of shooting in different locations and to work with natural light only, if possible. This can be anywhere, at your home, in a field, a park, a coffee shop, a street… Pretty much any place that tickles your fancy.

Digital or film?

I shoot digital. It allows for much more creativity and control plus you have the added bonus of getting much more shots in than you would with film.

What equipment do you use?

I ♥ Canon and it’s the only brand I use! I am addicted to my Canon 6D. It’s a professional, high performance, full-frame camera with very high ISO capability and it produces great skin tones in portraits. My all time favourite lens is my 50mm f/1.4. It’s incredibly sharp and great for portraits. I also love my 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens. It gives excellent optical performance at every focal length and distance. It’s image stabilization is great and it has unusually accurate, fast and consistent autofocus. When it comes to weddings I’ve recently learned to lean quite heavily on the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS ii which allows me to focus up close on my subjects while trying to blend into the background. For lighting I use mostly my reflector, as I love working with natural light, however, when necessary, I have 2 Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites and a ST-E3-RT speedlite transmitter.

Do you work with an assistant?

Yes. I would be lost without her! My assistant is in charge of my equipment. She has to carry everything, switch batteries, lenses and memory cards. She has to make sure I keep hydrated and that I don’t trip over anything (I tend to get so focused on my subjects while shooting, that I forget to watch where I’m going… ) and she assists with lighting by holding reflectors and helping with off-camera flash.

Do you charge for travel expenses?

I charge for travel expenses based on the AA rate at the time of the shoot, if the site is more than 30 kilometres from my home in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

Describe your ideal client?

I love all kinds of personalities. People are so interestingly diverse and entertaining! I like to get to know my clients before a shoot and build a relationship. This enables me to create images which reflects their personalities and style. My ideal client is someone who feels comfortable with themselves, humble, but confident and trust me and my creative vision implicitly. I will always listen to a couple’s ideas and do my ultimate best to keep them happy, but when handed a shot list my creative juices tend to leave the building. Seriously!

Do you post sneak peek’s on social media?

That’s entirely up to you. I find that most couples prefer a sneak peek on facebook to satisfy their curiosity while waiting for delivery of their images, but if you feel strongly that you want to be the first to see your photos, before your friends and family, I won’t post until after your package is delivered.

Do you digitally manipulate your images?

Yes, I am a perfectionist and put a great deal of love and effort into retouching your images. I do not deliver unedited or RAW images under any circumstances. Not if you ask nicely, not even if you are a fellow photographer/retoucher. 😉

Do you offer photo albums?

Yes, my supplier is an international company based in India and they distribute exclusively to professional photographers. Their albums are high quality, lay flat albums printed on photographic paper, with a choice between gloss, matt, or a mixture of both. They are available in a variety of square and landscape sizes and you can choose, between genuine or artificial leather, a printed combo, or my favourite, a stunning acrylic combo. They also offer a lifetime guarantee on the binding.

Can I pay with my credit card?

No, unfortunately I don’t have the facility.

Who owns copyright to your images?

Copyright is a very complicated subject and is often misunderstood. I retain copyright of all the images I take but grant clients the right to do basically anything with their photos outside of commercial use.
