We were celebrating Heritage Day in South Africa. It was 4:17am when I received the first whatsapp that Susan’s water had released. I enjoyed my coffee and a shower and then made my way over to Chris and Susan’s home in Brooklyn, Pretoria.
Susan wanted a home birth, but because baby was in the breech position her midwife advised that it was best if she gave birth at their birth unit in hospital. When I arrived at their home just after 7, Susan and her youngest son was making breakfast pancakes for everyone. Susan’s parents were already there to give a hand with the kids. After breakfast the family spent a few moments together in the playroom before the grandparents took the boys out for the day.
Heather from Midwives Exclusive and their doula, Samala, arrived, and then things started happening fast. By 10:30am Heather sent Samala and me ahead to the birth unit to get ready. When we arrived I put my camera bag down and as I walked back to get a book, they arrived and we had to run for a wheelchair. Susan was rushed into the labor room and as soon as Heather sat her down on the birthing stool, we saw a foot! Baby Stella was born at 11:16. A beautiful 3kg, 54cm baby girl.
Chris, Susan and Stella had some alone time together to bond, she was examined and then given the okay to go home. At home, Stella’s brothers and grandparents were waiting to welcome her into their family. They invited me for a glass of bubbly to celebrate a perfectly wonderful, special birth-day!
This was Susan’s third all natural birth. She is a natural birth advocate and hypno-birth practitioner. If you would like to learn more about your birth options feel free to contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
