One of the few perks of having a photographer as a parent is that you can coerce her into doing photo shoots for you and your friends for free. Carli and Esthie have asked for friendship shoots for more than a year but we could never settle on a date which suited everyone. My teenager realised that if she didn’t take matters into her own hands it would never happen so she forced a date out of me and arranged everything with her friends. The week before the shoot I was battling to find a place for the shoot (as usual) and got the idea of doing an all black & white shoot in a mall setting. I contacted the management of Middelburg Mall and asked if they would mind if I unleashed 6 girls in the mall for a teenage friendship shoot. They very graciously agreed. I also surprised the girls by arranging a beautiful vintage car to use in the parking lot. The greatest thing about doing free shoots for my kids is that I can just have fun, experiment and unleash my wacky creativity and “go ape” with retouching without worrying about “the rules” (blegh!) or meeting a client’s expectations. I’ve wanted to blog a black and white shoot for ages, and I love how this turned out.
